About Me

Raffy was born and raised in Pasig City, Philippines and has been a US resident for many years. He learned to play the guitar when he was 8 years old -  mostly by listening to recordings and observing other guitar players. He performed with a rock band during his teens but was eventually captivated by classical music, so he taught himself to play the classical guitar. Since living away from his country of birth, he has a natural longing for all things Filipino and has been on an ongoing journey to reconnect with his Filipino roots. Along the way, he discovered the beauty of Philippine music written by distinguished Filipino composers, past and present. His renditions on classical guitar bring back memories of when life was much simpler.

Ang pinakamadaling paraan na ma-identify ang isang classical guitarist ay ang pagpuna sa mga kamay. Mapapansin na mahaba ang mga kuko niya sa isang kamay at maiksi ang mga kuko sa kabila. Siyempre, hindi ito laging totoo kasi ganito rin ang makikita mo sa mga ukulele players pero mas kakaunti lang sila. Sa halip na gumamit ng plastic fingerpicks, ginagamit ng classical guitarist ang kanyang natural na kuko para mag-produce ng magaganda at iba’t-ibang uri ng tunog sa gitara. Merong ding mga gitarista na ayaw gumamit ng kuko, pero sa ngayon wala pa akong personal na nakikilala na hindi gumagamit ng kuko. Q: Paano ginagamit ang kuko sa pagtipa? You've probably already seen the video preview I posted a couple of days ago, so this rendition should sound familiar already. I didn't plan to use my "Antonio Loriente Angela" guitar for this recording, but I just grabbed the guitar that was closest to me when I sat down to record this piece. I really like the sound of this spruce top guitar that has served me for the last 15 years, but I need to change the strings the next time I use it to record. This guitar arrangement is by Filipino virtuoso guitarist, Monching Carpio, and it was based on a 1993 song which was popularized by Filipino balladeer Ariel Rivera.
